What is acne?
Acne is the most common skin condition in the UK, affecting around 95% of people aged 11 to 30, and a growing number of adults well into their 30s and 40s. It ranges from the occasional spot to persistent breakouts that leave marks and dent confidence.
The good news is that acne is one of the most studied skin conditions we have, and a consistent, science-led routine can make a visible difference within weeks. The key is treating the whole picture, excess oil, congestion, inflammation and the skin barrier, without stripping or irritating skin into producing even more oil.

The root of it
What causes acne?
Hormones
Androgens stimulate oil glands to produce more sebum, which is why acne flares in puberty, around menstruation, and with conditions like PCOS.
Excess oil
Overactive sebaceous glands leave a shiny film that traps dead cells inside the pore.
Clogged pores
Dead skin cells and oil clump together inside the follicle, forming a plug, the start of every blackhead and whitehead.
Bacteria
Cutibacterium acnes thrives in an oxygen-starved, oil-rich pore and triggers the inflammation behind red, sore spots.
Stress & lifestyle
Cortisol, poor sleep and high-sugar diets all nudge oil production and inflammation upward.
Your routine
The acne routine
A simple morning and evening routine, switch between AM and PM to see what each step does.
Cleanse
Morning and night, wash with a gentle salicylic cleanser to dissolve oil inside the pore, without scrubbing or stripping.
Moisturise
An oil-free gel moisturiser hydrates without feeding the breakout, skipping this step makes skin over-produce oil.
Protect
Daily SPF 30+ prevents post-blemish marks from darkening and shields healing skin from UV damage.
Realistic expectations
When will I see results?
Skin takes time to turn over. Tap each milestone to see what to expect, and when.
Weeks 1–2
Skin adjusts to the actives. Existing spots settle and oiliness begins to balance, some initial dryness is completely normal.

Your questions
Acne, your questions answered
High-glycaemic foods and, in some people, dairy may worsen breakouts. A balanced diet supports clearer skin, but your skincare routine does the heavy lifting.
